Children's Education

Drama!     Art!     Bible!     Community!

Children’s Education at St. John’s is taking a new and exciting leap this year.  Drawing on the gifts of our children, our youth and our teachers, we will follow an inclusive, two-track approach.

Every other week, our children will be collaborating on a series of Bible-based performance art pieces, culminating in a montage-type presentation in the Spring. With the help of our teachers and our talented teens, our children will work together to interpret a variety of sacred texts and then imagine, conceive, script, stage and act out their interpretation.  One need not be a “performance artist” to thrive in this class, for there are a wide variety of roles besides that of stage performance, and among our teachers’ many gifts is that of drawing out different persons’ different personalities and helping them discover their particular gifts.  This is a low-anxiety, no-trauma experience, led by Katie Brillat, an accomplished, professional NYSTI (New York State Theater Institute) teacher.

This same creative curriculum will be offered on other days of the week so to include children who are unable to stay after church on a given Sunday.

On alternating Sundays, we will offer an Episcopal curriculum, “Living the Good News,” fortifying  our children’s Bible knowledge and devotional lives.

Every Sunday, we will continue to offer children's sermons in the Snay Room during worship for children five years and older, allowing them an age-appropriate experience of Bible teaching, while fully including them in our community's celebration of Holy Communion.
